Agile vs. Waterfall: What’s the Best Methodology for Business Analysis?

Agile or Waterfall ?

A methodology is a simple way of managing and completing a project. Agile and Waterfall are two common project development methodologies. The way a BA performs this work is different in Agile and Waterfall. Waterfall follows a more planned and sequential approach. Agile follows a more flexible and iterative approach. Businesses need to choose the methodology according to their project needs.1). Waterfall methodology - this is a traditional methodology. The project is divided in different phases that are requirements gathering, design, development, testing, deployment. The second phase will start after the completion of the first. The BA generally collects and understands most requirements at the beginning. Requirements are documented in detail. In this methodology Documents such as BRD, FRD and requirement specifications, RTM may be prepared. Once the requirements are approved at that time the development phase will start. After giving approval changes are hard and costly. If your requirements are fixed, concise and clear at that time we can use this methodology. The role of the BA in this methodology is that requirements are clearly documented before development begins. In waterfall methodology the requirements are defined at the beginning of the project. In the waterfall model there is low customer interaction. The interaction happens at the beginning and end of the project. In the waterfall methodology there is too much documentation, slow delivery, no feedback is taken regularly and if changes are there they require the approval. In this methodology BA identifies the business problems after the identification of problems they have to identify stakeholders. After identification of stakeholders gather the requirement with the use of requirement elicitation techniques. In requirement analysis prepare UML diagrams to show requirements and activity diagrams to show the flow of the process from start to end. Prepare documents like BRD, FRS, RTM this document BA needs to be complete and takes client approval. After giving the approval the design phase will start. During the design phase BA have to prepare use cases, update the RTM. After that development phase will start during the development phase You need to communicate with the client and explain diagrams to the development team. During testing use has to prepare UAT and takes client approval. In the last deployment phase handover the project to the client and officially sign off the project.2). Agile methodology - this is a flexible and interactive methodology. Instead of doing the whole project once work is divided into small parts called sprint. In this methodology the requirements can be changed and improved during the project. In this methodology there are more customer interactions and continue feedback is taken from the client. In this methodology we can work as Product Owners. Requirements can be written as user stories. In the user story we can write acceptance criteria and business value by using a 100 $technique. The development team will give a complexity point with the use of the fibnoki series, and divide total work in tasks. Product owners prepare product vision documents that tell who are target group what are their needs and what product they want and what value that product gives to them. After writing all user stories added them to the product backlog. During sprint planning meeting scrum master and development team select user stories from product backlog and add them to sprint backlog. In agile methodology daily scrum meetings is happen. At The end of the sprint the sprint review meeting happened where the total completed work is shown to the client and took feedback and last sprint retrospective meeting. In agile methodologies there is less documentation and the fast delivery, requirement can be changed. The correct methodology depends on the project's nature. Agile is useful when requirements are frequently changing. Waterfall is useful when requirements are already clear. Agile is useful when customer feedback is very important. Waterfall works well when changes are limited. Agile is generally more suitable for projects where requirements change frequently. Waterfall can be suitable for projects with stable and clearly defined requirements.
