Agile vs. Waterfall: What’s the Best Methodology for Business Analysis?

Agile vs Waterfall: Which Approach Delivers Better Business Results?

1-Introduction Every business needs a clear approch to turn idea into clear solution, before starting a project a team understands what an organisation wants to achieve and then a BA comes, How a BA works? Working with the Stakeholders , Gathering the requirments, Identifying the business needs and communicating with the techinal team. There are 2 most common methodologies that are used that is Waterfall and Agile both have their own advantages and challanges. 2-What Is the Agile Methodology? Agile it takes a different route buy deviding the task in smaller parts and improving them on regular basis. Rather then working all together they work in small sprints Lets take a example- when developing a shopping application, the team might begin with product browsing and account registration. After receiving feedback, it could improve the search function and introduce online payments in later iterations. The BA helps team to understand needs of the user, prioritize the requirments, writing the user stories and having a clear conversation with the stakeholders , asking proper questions and providing the proper solution 3-What Is the Waterfall Methodology? Waterfall Methodology - The traditional one, in this the tasks are completed in the sequences of the stages. These stages includes requirement gathering, design, developing, testing, and Implementation. . Each stage has activities that need to be completed before moving to the next one lets suppose-a bank wants to develop an online account-opening system. In a Traditional methodology project, the BA gathers and documents the requirements in starting. The development team then builds the system according to those requirements. Testing takes place later in the process. Benefit of Waterfall methodology is that it provides clear documentation and plan is structured . 4-Key Differences Between Agile and Waterfall The key differentiation between these approches is how they manage requirements and changes. Waterfall follows a planned sequence, whereas Agile allows teams to adapt throughout development. Waterfall requires more detailed planning and documentation.Agile focuses on continuous collaboration, frequent feedback, and delivering smaller improvements.Testing in Waterfall is often concentrated in a later stage, while Agile teams generally test throughout development 5-Which Methodology Is Best for Business Analysts? Both Agile and waterfall are useful in BA, but the best choice depends on the project requirements and business goals.. Agile is suitable when requirments may change and getting regular clients feedback example devloping mobile banking application. However waterfall works better when the requirements are clear , stable and require the detail planning.Agile allows continuous improvement, while Waterfall provides a structured process. BA should know both methodologies and also aware then when to use them 6-Can Agile and Waterfall Be Used Together? A number of organisations use both approaches that is Hybrid approch. For example a company uses traditional approch for planning, budget and formal approval and Agile to develop software in small stages. This can provide structure with flexibility but it requires a good combination to achieve the business objective 7-Conclusion Both Methodologies are valuable and important in Business Analysis. Waterfall offers structure and predictability, while Agile provides flexibility and continuous improvement. In my opinion understanding the concept of both methodologies is very neccessary for a BA that can help them to understand where to apply which approch hence it will help to achieve the business goal.
