BA’s challenges in mergers and acquisitions Mergers and Acquisitions of organizations happen quite frequently due to various reasons, which could be to improve the overall profits, or to improve the quality of the products or other reasons. Business Analysts in such merger and acquisition projects play a crucial role as they are the only members who can talk to the clients and stakeholders and get their needs and requirements. A Business Analyst's role is highly challenging in merger and acquisition projects as they need to first understand the business of the two organizations, they should also understand the process flows of these organizations, perform Gap Analysis and then gather and understand new requirements from them as part of the merger or acquisition. BAs should also perform risk assessment to analyse the risks that can occur as part of this migration or acquisition and should also find ways to mitigate these risks. BAs need to setup meetings with both the clients and gather requirements from them. This is crucial and challenging as the clients may not share the requirements clearly as each client can have their own specific requirements. The BAs should be able to build a good rapport with the clients and then try to understand and gather requirements clearly from them. There may be disagreements with the clients as they can have conflicting requirements. This should be handled by BAs sensitively by conducting frequent meetings and try to facilitate and manage meetings by encouraging each client to express and also mediate discussions between them so that any disagreements or misunderstandings are clarified. There may be changes in the compliance and regulatory requirements in the two organizations which throw another challenge to the BAs who need to understand these regulations clearly and try to figure out a way to implement the new project requirements without disturbing these regulations of the two organizations. The BAs should be able to gather the requirements accurately and then draw use case diagrams that help the designers and architects to design and develop solutions to the required migration or acquisition. BAs convert the high-level Business requirements into functional and non-functional requirements so that it helps the developers and the testers to understand the requirements better and develop and test the features effectively. BAs should conduct several workshops and trainings to the team members to make them understand the new process as part of the merger or acquisition. They should also prepare training materials to share with the team to ensure smooth transition. BAs should ensure the system integration happens smoothly by ensuring incorporation of Business rules from both the organizations. This system integration should be tested end to end and validated thoroughly. BAs should explain these changes and enhancements to the change management clearly so that they are able to understand and approve the changes and these changes can then be implemented. BAs should be able to ensure that the data migration that happens as part of this migration and acquisition is accurate and error free as the data may be sensitive. BAs should also ensure that the system after migration or acquisition is stable and working as expected. To conclude, BAs play a major and challenging role in migrations and acquisition projects.
