Understanding User Stories: A Guide for Business Analysts

Business Requirements turned into Effective User Stories

In Agile development User Stories are important. The user stories describes the stakeholders requirements and their point of view. User Stories are helpful for development team in understanding its value for the business and its functionality. In User Story the format commonly used is -"As a User", "I Want", "So That", By using this format we get an understanding of who actually requires the functionality and it also clarifies what they want and why. In my JFL Audit Checklist enhancement the User Story Used - As an Auditor I want to view the previous audit observations next to my current observation so that it will help the auditors to compare previous observations easily. A business analyst supports in gathering business requirements, understands business needs and clarify the requirements and acceptance criteria with stakeholders. The product backlog is used for maintaining the user stories as per business value, urgency and its importance as per business requirements. The development team selects user stories for upcoming sprints at the time of Sprint Planning meeting. Post selection of user stories the development team initiates the development of selected user stories and the functionality of the selected user stories is tested by the testing team. For demonstrating the completed user stories and to collect stakeholders feedback Sprint Review meeting is conducted. For solving the business problems user stories are used. If the user stories are clear it will help the team in understanding the business needs and stakeholders requirements clearly. . This helps the project team in delivering and meeting the stakeholders requirements. For understanding the business & stakeholders requirements the user stories are helpful for the team so that the final developed product will be as per the stakeholders expectations and as per the required quality standards. Example- In my JFL Audit Checklist enhancement V1 the user stories helped in understanding the auditors requirements so that the final development meets the desired quality standard. In my current project the auditors were facing issue as they were not able to view the previous audit observation while doing audit. For referring to the previous audit observations the auditors have to download previous audit reports manually and then they have to compare the observations for identifying the store progress. Such manual comparison was time taking and also was difficult process for the auditors for tracking the repeated issues. User stories are helpful in understanding the acceptance criteria so that the final product developed meets the stakeholders expectations. In my project the Acceptance criteria includes the following- Previous audit observations to be displayed next to the current audit observations. The previous audit observations to be fetched by the system using Store ID & Checklist Item ID, The previous observations displayed should be Read Only & If there is no previous audit observations was available then the system should display No Previous Audit Observation Available, The enhancement should not effect the existing JFL audit checklist. The acceptance criteria helps the testers and development team to develop the functionality as per the users expectation.
