Requirements Life Cycle Management Requirements Life Cycle Management is the process of managing requirements from their initial identification through analysis, approval, implementation, validation, and eventual closure or retirement. It ensures that requirements remain aligned with business objectives and stakeholder expectations throughout the project. A Business Analyst plays an important role in documenting, prioritizing, communicating, tracing, and controlling requirements. 1. Requirement Identification The process begins by understanding the business problem, opportunity, objectives, and expected outcomes. The BA identifies the key stakeholders and determines what the business needs from the proposed solution. 2. Requirement Elicitation The BA gathers requirements from stakeholders using appropriate elicitation techniques such as interviews, workshops, observation, document analysis, surveys, and process walkthroughs. Both functional and non-functional requirements are captured, along with stakeholder concerns and business needs. 3. Requirement Analysis The collected requirements are analyzed to ensure they are clear, complete, consistent, feasible, and relevant. The BA identifies gaps, dependencies, assumptions, and conflicts. Complex requirements may be divided into smaller functional requirements or user stories. Tools such as process flows, use cases, prototypes, UML diagrams, and data models can be used to improve understanding. 4. Requirement Prioritization Requirements are prioritized according to business value, urgency, risk, dependencies, cost, and feasibility. The BA works with stakeholders and the Product Owner or project team to determine which requirements should be delivered first. For example, the MoSCoW technique can categorize requirements as Must Have, Should Have, Could Have, or Won't Have. 5. Requirement Approval After analysis and prioritization, requirements are reviewed with the relevant stakeholders. The BA conducts walkthroughs to confirm that requirements are correctly understood and obtains the necessary approval. In a Waterfall project, approved requirements may be formally baselined and used as the foundation for design, development, and testing. 6. Requirement Traceability The BA maintains traceability between requirements and related project deliverables. A Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) can link business requirements to functional requirements, design elements, development references, test cases, and UAT scenarios. This ensures that every approved requirement is considered during implementation and testing. 7. Requirement Communication The BA communicates requirements to business and technical teams through meetings, workshops, walkthroughs, documentation, and presentations. The BA acts as a bridge between stakeholders and development teams, clarifying questions and resolving misunderstandings. 8. Requirement Change Management Requirements may change because of new business needs, regulatory changes, technical limitations, stakeholder feedback, or market conditions. The BA evaluates the impact of proposed changes on scope, cost, schedule, design, development, testing, and other requirements. Approved changes are documented, updated in the relevant project documents, and communicated to impacted stakeholders. 9. Requirement Validation The BA works with QA and business users to confirm that the implemented solution satisfies the approved requirements. Acceptance criteria and test scenarios are used to verify that the expected functionality has been delivered. Any identified gaps or defects are analyzed and addressed with the appropriate stakeholders and development teams. 10. Requirement Closure Once requirements have been implemented and accepted, the BA ensures that relevant documentation, approvals, traceability records, and outstanding actions are completed. Requirements that are no longer applicable can be formally retired through the appropriate process.
