1. Introduction
Requirement elicitation is one of the most important activities in Business Analysis. It helps a Business Analyst understand the needs, expectations, and problems of stakeholders before developing a product or system. The success of a project depends on how clearly the requirements are identified and understood.
A Business Analyst acts as a bridge between business stakeholders and the technical team. By using appropriate elicitation techniques, a BA can collect accurate information, identify business problems, and help the organization develop effective solutions.
2.What is requirement Elicitation.
It is a process of discovering,collecting and understanding the requirements from stakeholders and other sources.It is not limited to imply asking questions.It also involves observing business activities,reviewing existing documnets,conducting discussions,and identifying the actual needs behind stakeholder requests.
For eg.A bank may want to develop an online home loan application system.The BA needs to understand the expectations of customers,Credit managers operations team and other stakeholders before documenting the requirements.
3.Important Requirement Elicitation Techniques-
There are several techniques that a BA can use depending on the project,stakeholder and business objectives.
Total 11 types of Elicitation techniques are there.
Interviews,workshops,Questionnaries,Observation,Document analysis,Brainstorming,Prototyping,Reverse Engineering,Focus group,Surveys.
4.Role of BA in Requirement elicitation-
The BA identifies relevant stakeholders,select suitable technique,ask question, listen carefully and clarifies doubts.BA also identified gaps or conflicting requirements and ensures that stakeholder have a common understanding of their needs.
After Elicitation,BA analyzes and documents the requirement,validate them with stakeholders and communicates them to the development team and testing teams.Reauirements may be documented in a BRD ,user stories or other appropriate formats depending on the project methodology.
