Elicitation is a technique which is used to gather requirement from the respective stakeholder and it a form of meeting which has specific objective through elicitation technique business analyst interact with the stakeholder to gather the requirements, understand current processes, identify improvement opportunity and define functionality needed to achieve business goals. there are eleven types of elicitation technique which helps to gather requirement they are brainstorming , document analysis , reverse engineering , focus group , observation , workshop , JAD , interview , prototype , questionnaire and use case spec . Business analyst use these technique to collect clarify and validate requirements. without proper elicitation techniques project may face dela , rework , increased cost and stakeholder unsatisfaction. In brainstorming all the respective stakeholders domain expert and SME's will be there all together discuss about the project and generate ideas BA will be shooting 5W1H question towards the stakeholders which helps to gather clearcut requirements. Reverse engineering helps to study the existing system and get to know how it works, focus groups where a group of selected stakeholders will be called for discussion and gather their opinion , observation there are two types in this active observation and passive observation , In active observation Ba will be observing without interrupting or asking any question whereas in passive observation he/she will be asking questions and gathering the requirements. workshop helps to gathers multiple perspective at the same time by arranging stakeholder discussion , JAD is a structured meeting where technical team members will be involved to gather requirements, Interviews will be conducted by business analyst mostly if there is any problem arise with stakeholder interviews will be conducted and its like a one on one discussion it helps to gather requirement from specific stakeholder there are two types in this open end question and close end question , document analysis is done to understand the existing business processes, prototyping is showing the sample of working model active it is advanced version of wireframe and mockup it helps to real working activity of application. in Questionnaire survey forms with multiple choice question will be there which is circulated to gather requirements from multiple user perspective. use case specification in this we gather requirement by describing how user interacts with system. different elicitation technique will be preferred according to the project type and stakeholders availability it helps to improve communication between stakeholders and project team and it also helps to define the scope clearly stakeholder participation is essential for successful elicitation , active listening and frequent questioning is important skill during elicitation , elicitation is performed during project lifecycle whenever there is need of requirements the ultimate goal of elicitation is to ensure that developed solution meets the project objectives and stakeholders expectation. In elicitation the stakeholders include clients , users , managers , SME'S , developers. Elicitation can be formal or informal according to the project some of the challenges in elicitation are stakeholders unavailability stakeholders conflicting requirements lack of domain knowledge and resistance to change.
